The Max and Lucy Mace Foundation is a charitable organization, named after the co-founders of the Heritage Singers, Max Mace and his wife Lucy, and their two children, Valerie Ann and Gregory James, founded in 2002.
History
Because of Love Foundation (2002)
In 2002, after the Heal the World Foundation was dissolved, Max Mace and his daughter Val founded own their charity organization called "Because of Love Foundation". Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, while Heritage Singers are filming during the recording session of "Because of Love" for the 'Because of Love' CD project in 2003, Michael Jackson records "What More Can I Give" at the suggestion of producer Marc Schaffel. Jackson and other artists recorded the new version of the song shortly afterward; the other artists included Mariah Carey, Reba McEntire, Anastacia, Nick Carter, 3LW, Beyoncé, NSYNC, Celine Dion, Boyz II Men members Shawn Stockman & Michael McCary, Brian McKnight, Luther Vandross, and Usher. In addition, a Spanish language version of the song was recorded. Entitled "Todo Para Ti", the lyrics were adapted into Spanish by the Panamanian musician Rubén Blades. Schaffel brought three-time Grammy winner K. C. Porter on to the project to give the Spanish version a different sound from the English recording.
The Lighthouse Foundation (2016)
In 2016, the Organization was renamed as "The Lighthouse Foundation". Heritage Singers' final 45th anniversary reunion was held at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on July 30, 2016, with 126 singers on stage. Following a bout with cancer, Max Mace died at his home in Placerville, California on November 4, 2020, one day shy of his 83rd birthday. At his memorial service held by the Loma Linda University Church, Max's daughter, Val Mace-Mapa, and her family have vowed to continue the forward-thinking path that Max and Lucy began, with Val becoming the new director of the Heritage Singers.
