- January: QUBE, the experimental cable television system carrying C-3 (the test channel that would become Nickelodeon), ends after seven years.
- February 1: The Alpha Repertory Television Service (ARTS), the second channel to air in the late night/early morning hours after Nickelodeon went off the air, merges with The Entertainment Channel to form the Arts and Entertainment Network (A&E), thus ending its run with Nickelodeon.
- October 1: Nickelodeon debuts its iconic orange Balloon logo, which it would use in numerous variations for the next 25 years.
