The 2nd Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards were held on April 18, 1988 at the Conan Sword and Sorcery Spectacular Arena at Universal Studios Hollywood. This was the first event held under this title, and first to feature a live audience, as well as celebrity hosts and attendees, while the first KCA occurred the previous year in 1987 as The Big Ballot, and only featured taped segments linked together by its studio hosts.

While the show recycled the same stage used by the Conan show, there was an added touch: the two tunnels were marked as Tunnels A and B. According to Les Lye, "A is alright, B is bad!" That was to say that exiting the stage through Tunnel A was alright, but bad things would happen when exiting through Tunnel B, which is something the hosts would learn the hard way, as exiting through Tunnel B led them on a whirlwind journey outside the studio.
