The 10th Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards were held on April 19, 1997 at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. Actress Rosie O'Donnell hosted the show, with former football player Terry Bradshaw stepping in as announcer, along with self-described KCA enthusiast "Gavin McShouts-a-Lot" on color commentary.
The theme for this year's show was school life and sports. The GOA was transformed into the "Nick-O-Drome", which took on the appearance of an urban schoolyard, with a basketball court, gym lockers at the back of the stage, and a yellow spiral slide that presenters could go down to reach the stage. The winners were revealed on large varsity-style banners arranged around the auditorium. Also arranged around the auditorium was a set of black and gold banners listing all of the entries into the KCA Hall of Fame, and the respective years they were inducted. Will Smith's banner would later be added during the show when he accepted his induction into the Hall of Fame.
The show's broadcast was followed by the series premiere of The Angry Beavers, making this the first KCAs to be followed by the premiere of a new Nicktoon. The 1997 KCAs were also the first to use a different logo than the one that had been used since 1988.

Rosie O'Donnell - At the end of the show, Rosie got a call via Nick-O-Vision from her old chum Madonna. After making small talk about the show, Madonna asked Rosie a biting question: "How come nobody's been slimed yet?" Rosie replied with a firm "I don't know!", only for the question to be rendered redundant as the slime rained down on Rosie. In her shock, she tasted the slime, noting "Hey, it tastes pretty good! Anyone want some?"
