The 14th Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards were held on April 21, 2001 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Rosie O'Donnell returned for her sixth consecutive year as host.

The theme of this year's show was outer space. The Barker Hangar was transformed into "Space Station Slime", with all kinds of intergalactic technology onstage. Among this technology was a device known as the "Slime Transducer", which would activate various audience and celebrity slimings throughout the show at the push of a button.

This was the first year to feature a burping contest, a KCA tradition that would continue for the next decade (with an exception in 2005, which focused on hidden talents instead). Cameron Diaz was crowned the inaugural winner of the contest. This was also the first year of the silver "Wannabe Award", replacing the KCA Hall of Fame award. This award was given to a celebrity that kids wanted to be like the most. Tom Cruise was named as the first winner of the Wannabe Award. The Wannabe Award would continue to be given out until 2008 (coincidentally, Cameron Diaz would win the final Wannabe Award that year).

The telecast was followed by the premiere of the Brothers Garcia episode "Love is Very... Confusing".
