The 22nd Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards were held on March 28, 2009 at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. Dwayne Johnson hosted the ceremony, which was watched by over 7.7 million people. This was the final KCA show held during Nickelodeon's "balloon" logo era (which had begun in late 1984 and later ended in September 2009), and also marked the last time the trademark orange blimp was used within its logo until 2013.

Voting for the KCAs commenced on March 2, 2009. More votes than ever were cast for this year's show, with a record 91.1 million cast online. According to Nickelodeon, the show was broadcast in over 228 million households across the network's 50 channels in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. Prior to the live telecast, Lily Collins, Pick Boy and JJ hosted the "orange carpet", featuring celebrity interviews and a live performance by Miranda Cosgrove, outside Pauley Pavilion.

The stage for the 2009 show took on the appearance of an "Active Slime Temple" ready to blow. To activate the slime temple, Johnson had to find the celebrity attending the show, dubbed the "Slime God", that held the key to the temple, which could then unlock the biggest sliming ever. Eventually, after his best efforts to find the Slime Gods failed, Johnson turned to more ancient approaches. With the help of an ancient slime ritual, the Slime Gods were revealed to be the Jonas Brothers, who performed their song "Lovebug" (with the line "catch this lovebug again" changed to "catch this slime time again") and triggered the Slime Temple, unleashing all of the slime.

The telecast of the ceremony was followed by the premiere of The Penguins of Madagascar episodes "Lauchtime" and "Haunted Habitat".
