Garfield is a multimedia franchise created by Jim Davis, originating as a comic strip that debuted on June 19, 1978. It stars a lazy orange cat named Garfield, his oddball owner Jon Arbuckle, Jon's dopey dog Odie, and their various friends along the way.
On August 6, 2019, Nickelodeon's parent company, ViacomCBS, announced that it had acquired the rights to the franchise through a buyout of Paws, Inc.[1] Nickelodeon will produce a new animated series starring the character.[1]

Notes[]
- Despite owning the franchise, past Garfield adaptations are not owned by Paramount Global. These include:
- The prime-time animated specials plus Garfield and Friends (which are owned by 9 Story Media Group)
- The live-action films Garfield: The Movie and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties plus the CGI direct-to-video films Garfield Gets Real, Garfield's Fun Fest, and Garfield's Pet Force (which are owned by the Walt Disney Company following their acquisition of 20th Century Fox, now known as 20th Century Studios, along with the rest of Fox)
- The CGI animated series The Garfield Show (which is owned by Dargaud)
- And the CGI animated film The Garfield Movie (which is owned by Sony Pictures despite the fact the movie was released 5 years after the acquisition)
- However, due to Nickelodeon acquiring the franchise, Garfield and Friends received its own channel on the Pluto TV service on September 7, 2021. The first live-action movie would also be added to Paramount+.
- Long prior to the acquisition, syndicated reruns of Garfield and Friends aired on Nickelodeon from 1997 to 2000. Also, Nickelodeon aired the two live-action movies in 2015 and 2016.
