Garfield Cat , born as Victor Jr. , is the titular main protagonist of the newspaper comic franchise of the same name . On August 6 , 2019 , Nickelodeon 's parent company (ViacomCBS ) announced that it had acquired most rights to the Garfield franchise through a buyout of Paws, Inc.[ 2] Nickelodeon will produce a new animated series starring the Garfield character.[ 2]
Garfield is a lazy, overweight, cynical orange cat who lives with his nerdy owner Jon Arbuckle and his dim-witted dog Odie . Born in the kitchen of Mama Leoni's Italian Restaurant in 1978, Garfield enjoys sleeping all the time and eating all the food he can get his hands on, especially lasagna.
From 1997-2000, syndicated reruns of Garfield's first television series, Garfield and Friends aired on Nickelodeon . As a result of ViacomCBS's acquisition of the franchise, Garfield and Friends received its own channel on the Pluto TV service on September 7, 2021.
