Martin Johanssen is the father of Gerald, Jamie O and Timberly on Hey Arnold!
Biography[]
A businessman, Martin is obsessed with saving money, often going over the top on the price of things like the electric bill ("Gerald Comes Over").
He served in the Vietnam War, being drafted as a 19-year-old in 1972 (which means he was born in 1952 or 1953), apparently serving with the 101st Airborne Division (the "Screaming Eagles") as evidenced by his left-side patch, but he had the flu during most of his basic training and was mainly a "paper/pencil pusher" in the US Army Medical Corps, never seeing or engaging in combat. However, it is revealed he saved the life of a downed helicopter pilot near An Loc. The pilot was Miller, and over 20 years later, he meets Martin again at the Vietnam War Memorial to personally thank him for saving his life. This earns Gerald's respect.
Martin also uses an asthma inhaler ("Veterans Day").
