Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon

Nickelodeon Greece (often called Nick Greece) is a cable and free-to-air in Athens television channel, counterpart of the American Nickelodeon. It is owned by the Local TV Anonymous Broadcasting, Film, Advertising & Publishing Company and operated by Restis Media Group (known as Restis MG), responsible for also operating RISE (formerly known as MTV Greece). The channel was launched on September 3, 2010 on Immitos, with an analog signal for Parnitha start being broadcasted two years later.[1] A HD version of Nickelodeon started officially broadcasting on October 17, 2011 via COSMOTE TV.
Before that, Nickelodeon shows would originally air as a whole, on premium channel Alpha Kids (featured on the Alpha TV subscription service, Alpha Digital), and there would be later a block on Alpha TV's sister channel Channel 9 from 2002 to 2008.

History

Alpha TV era

In 2001, premium channel Alpha Cinema 1, which was available on Alpha Digital, (a television service owned by the newly established at the time sister company of Alpha TV, Alpha Digital Synthesis) would air a Nickelodeon block on noons, a first for Greece.[2] Around the same time, another cypriot block featuring Nickelodeon shows would start airing on a cypriot premium channel, called Alfa TV (not to be confused with the Greek free-to-air station). In March 2002, another channel for the service would be made, called Alpha Kids. It was basically an independent version of that Nickelodeon block, now removed from Alpha Cinema 1. The timeslots would be left intact, and more specifically, it would broadcast from 1pm to 4pm in weekdays, and 7am to 3pm in weekends,[3] until a few months later, when the schedule expanded from 7am to 8pm.[4]

Alpha Digital shut down on September 11, 2002, due to a low subscription amount and financial difficulties. Thus, all channels transmitting on satellites Hot Bird 1 and Eutelsat 16B would gradually stop doing so. Shortly after that, Alpha TV would start airing the Nickelodeon cartoons under an Alpha Kids block.[5] In late 2003, a local Athens channel called TVCosmopolis (previously called POLIS; sister station of Alpha TV) would start airing Nickelodeon cartoons, in a block also known as Nick Toons.[6] Similarly to other counterparts of Nickelodeon like the Russian one, 90's bumpers of the US network would air after commercial breaks. There would also be competitions vased on the shows themselves, where viewers had to answer a question (ex.: "What's the name of the school, where Ginger Footley goes on?) and send the answer in the address of the station's headquarters, in order to win known at the time, toys.

In the next era, after a fire incident that almost completely destroyed the station's headquarters on October 11, 2005 and the channel being renamed to Channel 9 in December of the same year, the latest at the time splat bumpers and commercial used by the US network about the shows in Greek were started being used, plus promos in the splat format (which were also used in the network's Japanese counterpart), and promos (with a few of them using the track "Scatterbrain," sung by Andrew Blythe and Marten Joustra, and known to be used on old Disney Playhouse promos). The block ended on December 2007.

2010-2011 era

On July 12, the channel (then under its old name "Local TV") started broadcasting Nickelodeon cartoons on a trial basis. From early August, a commercial regarding the Fun Tour 2010 would also be shown. Later, the channel launched under its current name on September 3, on 06:00am starting off with an airing of the first episode of The Wild Thornberrys. The Fun Tour 2010 commercial continued to be shown until late September. More Nickelodeon cartoons were added to the schedule, soon after.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN6XfmhH7Fg) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5cgJrCOh10&t=1s)

Nickelodeon Greece's new programming started with the promotion of the series The Mojicons, with the slogan "Ξέχνα ότι ήξερες για το κίτρινο!" (Forget what you thought about yellow!), as well as the new rebrand that was about to come. The series finally premiered on September 11, on 11:30am. Also, Yo-Kai Watch, which has aired in selected Nickelodeon channels across Europe, premiered in Greece on September 3, on 09:45am. Later, Nickelodeon would change its schedule, transferring all the live-action series from 19:30-21:30 to 11:00 AM-12:55 AM Monday to Friday only, thus stopping airing 90's Nicktoons as a whole. Despite numerous changes on those timeslots over the years, including the addition of The adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Danny Phantom, the only pre-2009 nicktoons airing nowadays on the network, a few live-action still air nowadays around mornings and noons. Also, every Sunday, instead of an airing of a Nick Jr. show on 20:30, a Nickelodeon Movies (short: Nick Movies), featuring made-for-cable movies would be put.
Alongside promotional leaflets and commercials, Nickelodeon would promote the arrival of new shows, most of them foreignly-made, and new episodes from SpongeBob SquarePants, Rabbids Invasion, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles etc.
During late September 2016, Nickelodeon would promote the premiere of the shows Regal Academy (October 3) and Pig Goat Banana Cricket (October 1; haven't been any further plans for the premiere of the second season). Also, banners started appering for the first time in shows. The foreign shows that would air later this year, were Pumpkin Reports, Endangered Species (Τριπρος Μπελάς), The Deep (Τα Μυστικά της Αβύσσου) and Zorro: The Chronicles. For a long period, Nickelodeon was focusing on its weekend schedule, putting there premiere airings of episodes.

2017-2018 era

On June 19, Nickelodeon Greece got rebranded. The same day Toon Marty and Bunsen is a Beast (Μπάνσεν το Τέρας) were supposed to premiere. Instead, Toon Marty premiered on June 29 and Bunsen on July 17.

During that, it was reported on news websites that Restis Media Group, the company operating the Greek counterpart of the network, along with RISE (formerly known as the Greek counterpart of MTV) and the radio station Music 89,2, was passing crisis, with officials being two months unpaid, and contract workers with a "block" remaining unpaid even more. In the meantime, several people were fired (especially on Nickelodeon, where they were sent even with count clerks), with them later trying to take their statutory compensation. It was also said, that the owner would no longer pay anything by essentially accusing the staff of being responsible for the financial situation of the company.

September started with the premieres of Maggie and Bianca: Fashion Friends and the German game show Cool Factor. The next month, World of Winx,[7] Wallykazam!, and Nella the Princess Knight premiered. In November, new SpongeBob SquarePants season 10 and 11 episodes premiered.

Around December, Nickelodeon Greece would premiere holiday specials and movies it didn't air before, mostly including Nickelodeon's Ho-Ho Holiday Special, Albert, and Tiny Christmas (all of them subtitled), with most of them being broadcasted more than once. Also, instead of the network airing all the holidays specials of animated series around Christmas Day, there would be 2-hour marathons on weekends.

In January, Nickelodeon Greece premiered Hunter Street, I am Frankie (Με λένε Φράνκη; which was accompanied with a contest about winning a scholarship at the Academy of Robotics of the Cultural Park - Lycabettus Multicore with the certification of the University of Macedonia), Sunny Day (Η Ημέρα της Σάνη), and Rufus 2.

In February and March, it premiered new episodes of Toon Marty, World of Winx, The Day Henry Met, Henry Danger, and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn (including the Go Hollywood indepedently advertised special). Also, the SpongeBob Gold Heart of Gold celebration event aired between March 12 and 16.

2024 era

On May 11, Nickelodeon Greece got rebranded with the current 2023 campaign on 06:05am during an airing of iCarly, after teasers being shown about it a few weeks before. Besides from the logo, the idents and bumpers were also replaced with the current ones. In addition, DORA premiered on the same day and Rock Island Mysteries on May 13. Co-operations

TTpoweredByNickelodeon

The company owning the channel itself, has had co-operations with local stations of Peloponnese. TeleTime was airing a Nickelodeon block on 6am-9am and 2:30pm-6:00pm in weekdays, and on 6am-1pm and 2:00pm-6:00pm in weekends, with the co-operation starting September 2010, over a year after the start of its co-operations with MTV Greece. Following events would include gradually firing almost everyone working there and Nickelodeon cartoons along with live streaming of MTV music clips in late night, taking up most of the schedule in early 2011, with the channel being known as "ΤΤ powered by Nickelodeon", and the schedule being completely free of informative shows, since July 2011.[8] Plus, unlike Nickelodeon Greece, the National Television Council would disapprove the station's change in physiognomy from informative to non.[9][10] Due to a number of forfeitures from the Council being forced to them, with the participation of the Union of Daily Newspaper Editors of the Peloponnese-Epirus-Islands, the channel would return to its initial programming for a while, starting March 2012, despite complaints from parents and children for that decision, and fears from the executives about the station's closure.[11][12] At the same time, the very last five employees working on the station would get fired because of the management's inability of continuing employing, following 16 months of 34 employees, also getiing fired.[13] Despite that, one month later, TeleTime would still continue with its Nickelodeon/MTV programming, but with the TT powered by Nickelodeon logo replaced with the original one, and a scheduling technicial and an accountant working on its headquarters. It started airing news bulletins again, on October 2018, with the station's change on the general manager position.

On August 2012, MTV Greece and Nickelodeon Greece started airing their programming to another local station operating in Peloponnese, called Super B, despite a hadful of cartoons like Monsuno, still airing on TeleTime, during its temporary revamp. Super B stopped airing Nickelodeon cartoons on December 14, 2015.

In early September 2017, it was announced via press releases and Facebook, that Ilektra TV (Ηλέκτρα Τηλεόραση) would reopen in Peloponnesus, and that co-operations would include the Restis Enterprises stations, RISE and Nickelodeon.[14][15] Due to bureaucracy, the station would start airing Nickelodeon cartoons with live streaming, in Spring 2018,[16] during mornings, and in the form of live streaming from the Athens station.

Trivia

  • The female narrator for promos on Nickelodeon Greece till 2017, was Georgina Razack, who was also part of the team that launched Nickelodeon Greece in the first place, director and producer of its trailers from conception to delivery, and responsible for its programming strategy.
  • There were cases, where the screen would start glitching, while a cartoon was airing on, in order to change the up-left logo with a slightly different version, which would be seen either for very few minutes or many hours before returning to its original one. They were happening since early 2013.
The up-left logo was finally changed with the newest (so it can fit with the 2017 rebrand), on June 19, 2017, and since then, it was perennially used until the 2023 rebrand that took place on May 11, 2024.
  • The rating bumpers with the latest new music started airing around October 16 and 20, 2017.
