Sandra "Sandy" Jennifer[2] Olivia[3] Cheeks is a major character in SpongeBob SquarePants. She is a squirrel from Texas who is one of SpongeBob's best friends, voiced by Carolyn Lawrence.
Sandy is able to survive underwater with the help of her air-locked "Treedome" and her pressurized diving suit. She is notable for her Texan characteristics and knowledge of karate and science. She often misses home and wants to go back to Texas.
Sandy is also the current NVP announcer on NFL Slimetime.
Background[]
Sandy first meets SpongeBob in the second half of the show's first episode, "Tea at the Treedome". After he helps her fight off a clam, Sandy invites SpongeBob over for lunch at her house, though SpongeBob does not realize until after he has arrived that she lives in an airdome. However, flashbacks in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and the prequel series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years appear to contradict this, instead showing Sandy having met SpongeBob and Patrick at the eponymous camp. The Kamp Koral episode "Kitchen Sponge" explains this discrepancy by revealing that Sandy had her younger self sent to camp as a way of stopping Plankton from stealing the Krabby Patty formula at that point in time.
Personality[]
Sandy is a generally caring friend to SpongeBob, though she can be pretty competitive. She takes pride in her Texan heritage and does not like it when anyone speaks badly of her homeland.
Physical appearance[]
Sandy Cheeks is a slender brown furred squirrel with a large bushy tail, tan stomach and muzzle, a pink nose, a buck-tooth, and black eyelashes.
When Sandy is outside of her Treedome, she is most frequently seen wearing her white diving suit for oxygen. The suit has a silver zip on the front and a yellow square-shaped patch with an acorn on it at the front on the right side of the zip. It also has three rings on the sleeves which are two red rings and one blue ring in the center. The suit has a pair of white mittens. She also wears graphite boots with one red dot on each side of the shafts and darker graphite soles. The suit comes with a big glass helmet with a flower with a yellow center and five pink floral petals placed on the top left corner.
In various spin-off media, she is slightly redesigned. In Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, she wears pink glasses and braces, as well as a purple dress that resembles her bikini, and a red handkerchief. In The Patrick Star Show, her design is the same as the main show, with the only difference being black glasses.
When Sandy appears inside her Treedome, she wears purple clothing, which is swimsuit/swimwear/bathing suit-like in appearance. Her primary outfit consists a purple bikini top, a purple tiny platter tulle/tutu skirt with 7 medium-sized wavy frills around it it, and light green undergarments. She is also barefoot. In Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, her undergarments are entirely purple. In "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy", when her fur pelt is off, she wears a purplish violet bra and matching panties. In Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, she wears a pink one-piece swimsuit with a purplish violet skirt. And in The Patrick Star Show, she wears a lab coat and behind it is a light blue shirt.
When she is exercising on her hamster wheel, she can be seen wearing a white hoodie and blue workout sweats.
At night, she wears a nightgown. It changes color depending on the episode. In "Sandy's Rocket", she is first seen wearing a sky blue sleeveless nightgown and is shown for a split second until the camera cut to her face. In "Karate Choppers", she wears a lavender nightgown while karate-chopping over the phone with SpongeBob. In "Survival of the Idiots", Sandy wears a pink sleeveless nightgown throughout the episode. In "Overbooked", she wears a sleeveless purplish violet nightgown with a front V neck and back scoop neck and is barefooted while giving a presentation to her colleagues.
Sandy sometimes appears without her fur, most notably in "Survival of the Idiots" and "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy".
She was dressed up like a goldfish in "Scaredy Pants," but only her head resembles one.
Interests and skills[]
Sandy has many skills. She has a vast knowledge of science, with many of her spotlight episodes (especially after the first movie) focusing on her scientific exploits. She also enjoys karate and often battles SpongeBob for fun.
