The Newest Nicktoons is the second Nicktoon-themed compilation album. Following up The Best of Nicktoons, it was released by Kid Rhino on audio cassette and CD on October 2, 2001, alongside Dance And Sing! The Best of Nick Jr.
Like The Best of Nicktoons before it, a piece of "Nick On-Air Music" comes between each show's selection of songs on the album. Ironically, these particular music pieces were from past Nickelodeon station IDs and bumpers, many of which the network had stopped using at the time of the album's release.
Curiously, unlike its predecessor, the album only presents musical highlights from half of the shows featured; SpongeBob SquarePants, Rocket Power, Invader Zim, Pelswick (despite not actually being produced by Nickelodeon, but distributed by Corus), ChalkZone, and The Fairly OddParents are represented only by their theme songs (though SpongeBob had its first album released almost two months earlier; and Rocket Power, Invader Zim, ChalkZone, and The Fairly OddParents would each receive their own albums later).
Clean studio recordings were used for all the tracks presented on this album. The ChalkZone theme song on the album, notably being used here six months before the show's official premiere (albeit after its "sneak peek" on New Year's Eve 1999), differs slightly from the version heard in the show (and on its own soundtrack, In the Zone), using a synthesizer in place of the electric guitar heard in the normal opening. Also, the album's version of "I'm in Between" (the As Told by Ginger theme song) is the original version by Cree Summer (which had already been replaced by Macy Gray's version by the time the album came out), and "The Fairly OddParents Theme Song" is inexplicably missing the character vocals.
Two of the selected songs from Hey Arnold! - "Keep Your Sunny Side Up" and "When Life Gives You Lemons" - were from the episode "Eugene, Eugene!", which did not air in the US until January 28, 2003, over a year after the album's release.
