The Smurfs (original French title: Les Schtroumpfs) is a Belgian-French computer-animated fantasy-comedy television series based on the Smurfs comic book series, and more specifically the movie Smurfs: The Lost Village. The series was developed by two Belgium-based companies, Peyo Productions and Dupuis Audiovisuel, along with the participation of TF1 in France. It made its world premiere on the OUFtivi channel in Belgium in March 18 2021. It made its US debut on Nickelodeon in August of the same year.
The show was announced by Peyo in 2017. Most of the European broadcasters (namely TF1 in France) were announced the next year. In 2020, it was revealed that the American broadcast rights had been picked up by Nickelodeon, but the airing agreement does not extend to the original 1980s Smurfs series by Hanna-Barbera (which continues to air on Boomerang).
