The Smurfs Movie[1][2] or just Smurfs is an upcoming computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film based on The Smurfs, being directed by Chris Miller and based on a story by Pam Brady.[3] It is the first Smurfs film adaptation to be produced without the involvement of Columbia Pictures or Sony Pictures Animation. The film is being produced by Ryan Harris, Jay Brown, Rihanna, and Tyran "Ty-Ty" Smith, with Rihanna starring as Smurfette, alongside an ensemble cast including Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman.

The Smurfs Movie is scheduled to be released theatrically on July 18, 2025 by Paramount Pictures.[4]

In February 2022, multiple feature films based on the Smurfs, as well as another season of the original television series, were put into development. The first project under the new creative partnership with LAFIG Belgium and IMPS, the company that owns the Smurfs brand, will be an animated musical film, which is slated to begin production this year and set to release in theaters on December 20, 2024. Pam Brady, a “South Park” alum, has come on board to write the upcoming movie. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation produce the film.[3] In August 2022, Paramount Pictures pushed back the date for its Untitled Smurfs Animated Musical.[4] In April 2023, at Paramount Pictures‘ CinemaCon presentation, it was announced that Rihanna wound be lending her voice to Smurfette in Nickelodeon MoviesThe Smurfs Movie. Rihanna also is producing the movie and providing songs. The Chris Miller-directed movie comes out on February 14, 2025. Co-director is Matt Landon. Pam Brady wrote the script inspired by characters and works of Peyo. Producers also include Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith.[5]

Casting[]

In April 2024, Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell and John Goodman joined Rihanna in the voice cast.[6]

Animation[]

The Smurfs Movie's animation services will be provided by Cinesite in Vancouver. The film's animation draws heavy influence from Peyo's original comics. The artist's drawings inspired many of the creative choices taken with the film's look, including the incorporation of action lines and comic thought bubbles, as well as "a fun and buoyant, with plenty of squash and stretch."

Release[]

The Smurfs Movie will be released on July 18, 2025 by Paramount Pictures.[4][5] Originally scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, also a Paramount film, took the latter release date, pushing it forward to its current release date February 14, 2025 until it was delayed until July 18, 2025.
