The Thundermans Return is a film based on The Thundermans. Production began on April 1, 2023 and wrapped on April 28th.[1] It released on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ on March 7, 2024.[2] A sneak peek was shown during Super Bowl LVIII Live from Bikini Bottom on February 11, 2024.
Following the success of the film, a spin-off series has been greenlit.
Plot[]
The film starts out in Metroburg where meteors are about to destroy the city. Random city-goers start to panic and ask if there are any superheroes that can save them. When one of them says "We need more than one, we need them". It then cuts to the T-Force (as of The Thunder Games) all in heroic positions, as they fan out and they all say their superhero names (everyone except Max has one as of The Thunder Games). Starting with Phoebe and Max, the co-captains of the T-Force, they each take down a meteor in their own way.
Now in their Metroburg home, they are relieved that it was another successful mission. Max is on a live stream with his fans until Phoebe drops his phone out of his hands. Billy then hits the penguin butler revealing the exact same photo of the new T-Force team. Nora then mentions how they no longer live a double life, unlike when they were in Hiddenville. As Barb gets everyone excited for family night (different then Family Game Night in He Got Game Night), Phoebe goes and mentions how they have to debrief the mission first. Everyone is upset and Phoebe starts with Nora stating that she should ricochet her eye lasers to give them more power. Nora does exactly that to destroy Phoebe's tablet.
Cut to Chloe, Phoebe, and Max all playing a board game at the table. Except Phoebe is too obsessed on how she is a cinch for Superhero of the Year and Max is obsessed on how he was rated "Cutest super-Bachelor". Billy wants to video-chat with their new friends and Nora mentions how they haven't made any due to their demanding lifestyle. Hank made some Chili and is trying to find a butt grove (as mentioned in Stealing Home). While Barb is mentioning how it is finally nice to have a family night.
Then there is a crime alert and Barb thought it was about Hank trying to find his butt groove. Phoebe mentions its an actual crime and then Max tries to access the crime lab, but runs into the wall as he had the TV remote. Phoebe then reveals the Crime Lab and pinpoints where the crime is happening. They pull up the street camera and notice that a villain named Blue Flame robbing the Metroburg Bank. Phoebe and Max say they should take this crime alert, while Hank and Barb are upset since they agreed to a Family Night and say let another team take it. Barb asks the assistant who is on call tonight and it replies the "V-Team" in which Max then pulls up their profile, which reveals a flashy video of their team. Max and Phoebe then determine they are taking this crime alert and order the rest of the family to suit up, despite the family night promise.
At the crime scene, Phoebe orders the T-Force to block all exits. She gets Blue Flame's attention and before she finishes her sentence, she gets attacked. Max then takes to the sky with a jetpack he brought. No one has a clear shot except for Max who takes a sky selfie, who mentions he gets photobombed by the V-Team. They tell the T-Force they can back down, but Phoebe and Max deny. Phoebe then orders Nora to fire when ready, but Nora mentions how the suit looks laser-resistant, Despite Nora's concerns Phoebe orders her to take the shot and she does, but her shot ricochets off of Blue Flame's suit and hits Max's jetpack causing Max to lose control. He then crashes into a giant donut and it falls onto a member of the V-team. Blue Flame attempts to escape, but then gets hit with a plasma blast and is captured by the V-Team. Max then lands and the whole family is concerned on their mission failed. When they are home the Thunder assistant alerts them that Super President Kickbutt is approaching. Nora reassures them that there is no way President Kickbutt already heard about their failure, but she is proven wrong.
President Kickbutt enters and decommissions the T-Force in light of the failed mission. They are fired because the rules say anyone who injures a Supe in the line of duty must be fired, despite being the most successful team in history. Despite the V-Team crashing the mission, they caught Blue Flame while Max knocked over a two-ton donut. Max then states that it would be hard to replace them, but President Kickbutt brings out the V-team. They have to turn in their supersuits and be out by noon tomorrow. Barb asks "Where are they suppose to go?".
Back in Hiddenville, the Thunder Monitor alerts and says "Welcome Back Thundermans, would it have killed you to say goodbye?". Since they did not say goodbye at the end of Thunder Games, when they left to become the T-Force. Chloe mentions how "it looks exactly the same" and Hank follows up with "it's like we never left". Max and Phoebe still upset about being fired, state what actually happened. Barb tells Max and Phoebe to "Make the best of it" and Max is looking at the photo of them in their supersuits and says "stop mocking me". Then he switches the photo back to them in normal clothes, showing the Penguin Butler works again. Nora and Billy are excited to finally be going to high school and go shopping for clothes. Hank is happy his butt groove is back and they then walk away.
Phoebe has no idea what to do now that they no longer are superheroes, as that is what she has worked her whole life towards since arriving in Hiddenville (Thunder Van, ThunderSense, etc). Max states they are still superheroes since they still have their powers and uses his telekinesis to bring an energy bar towards him, takes a bite, and then spits it out since it is three years old. Max talks about how the V-Team are already regretting their jobs. Phoebe thinks its because they can never live up to the T-Force legacy, but Max states its because he put glue on all the toliet seats. Max is happy he has his lair back and then goes down his slide.
At the bottom of his slide, Max sees Dr. Colosso having a party with a bunch of different animals. Then they realize there is a human and flee, while Dr. Colosso has yet to realize Max is there. Dr. Colosso is surprised when Max says hey and asks "What is he doing back?". Max then states they were replaced by the V-Team and Phoebe comes down. Dr. Colosso tries to be sympathetic towards Phoebe, but it grosses both of them out as they have always had a poor relationship. Phoebe then goes onto saying "How she wants to help people here in Hiddenville" and then Colosso states "How they should incite fear and terror with their superpowers" since he's a villain. Phoebe uses telekinesis to pour a bowl of chips over Dr. Colosso's head and leaves. Max then decides to use his superpowers to get a job to help rebuild the Max-brand.
The next morning, Barb and Hank are so happy to be making breakfast and to be a family again. On the way out Billy and Nora grab a waffle and Hank slows them down stating "What is the rush". Billy and Nora are eager to have friends to make and fit in with their essentials of cool teen clothes, ways to start conversations, and beef jerky. Nora and Billy then leave and Barb asks Nora if "she needs a bow for school" and Nora replies "No thanks", while lasering the bow. Which shows she has finally outgrown her bows, which is surprising considering Who's Your Mommy episode. Barb and Hank then turn all their attention to Chloe who is learning how to skateboard. Hank and Barb start freaking out that their kids may not need them to protect them anymore and then freak out when Chloe uses the toaster.
At Hiddenville High, Nora and Billy finally meet Principal Bradford, who welcomes them until he notices their last name is Thunderman. He then starts to freak out and offers to pay them off to not attend Hiddenville High as his life has been going great. Ever since Max and Phoebe left he moved out of the lockers, gotten back together with Janet and grew an awesome ponytail. When they say "they can just stay out of his way" Bradford gets visibly upset. Nora and Billy then agree to make friends normally and not use their superpowers until some girls overhear that their last name is Thunderman. When asked if they had superpowers, Nora starts showing off her laser eyes. Billy
Phoebe reunites with Cherry in Splatburger and they are thrilled to see each other. They take a reunion selfie and Cherry mentions "How she has been holding auditions for a new Phoebe. but no one is working out". They then go and sit at the table and Phoebe mentions "how she wants to get a job where she helps people". Cherry says she has a job where she helps people and shows her Splatburger shirt. Cherry mentions how they should work together and Phoebe is hesitant to work for Mrs. Wong. Cherry claims Mrs. Wong has changed and then Mrs. Wong is surprised to see Phoebe back and mentions how "it brings back a lot of bad memories". Phoebe says to Cherry "I thought you said she was different now" and Cherry replies "I mean she lost the accent, she is still really mean". Phoebe asks for a job and Mrs. Wong accepts not for the best reasons though. As Cherry and Phoebe go into the kitchen, Max and his band walk in. Max has rejoined the band, at the expense of their old lead singer, Grandpa Giddy. After Max reminisces on the terrible food, the fries are sucked back up the tube, since Mrs. Wong installed microphones at every table to shut down complainers. He had started a new business, "Superpowers by the Hour," where he uses his powers to help people with odd jobs. He takes a job as Grandpa Giddy drops his phone in a soda.
At Metroburg Super Jail, Dark Mayhem, King Crab and Strongdor are playing Jenga when King Crab knocks it over. They are visited by the V-Team who tell the villains that they're in charge now after they got the Thundermans fired, and reveal their true identities: Dark Mayhem Jr., son of Dark Mayhem, She-Crab, daughter of King Crab, and Krondor, son of Strongdor. With the Thundermans out of the picture, the villain fathers think their children are releasing them to resume their outdated evil plan. The V-Team are doing their own plan to create a worldwide army of supervillains with a secret item the Hero League has been guarding for 100 years.
As Max and Phoebe return home from their jobs, they say work was awesome, before immediately in unison declaring they have to get their superhero jobs back. They try to persuade their family to form the Tree Force, with apple tree costumes. The family doesn't want to be the T-Force anymore because Max and Phoebe always put superhero glory above family and never spent time with them. After the twins argue about Phoebe's desire to be the best and Max' desire for fame, they each decide to get their jobs back individually, discovering the truth about the V-Team and their parentage. If they expose the V-Team, they'll be fired and the Thundermans get their jobs back!
Nora's laser eyes prove popular with the Hiddenville High student body. Billy tries offering a potential friend some beef jerky, but when it doesn't work, he wins the students over with his Super Speed. Nora attacks him for stealing her new friends as he deflects her lasers with a tray, accidentally zapping off Bradford's ponytail.
The V-Team are searching for the secret item, supposedly guarded by the Hero League's longest serving hero, Hank. Phoebe infiltrates the headquarters, but Max is already there. The V-Team don't find the secret item they were looking for, but they do find the keys to the Hero League's mega yacht and designer utility belt closet. Max and Phoebe are shocked they never knew about those things in their time as the T-Force, but express it a little too loudly. Mayhem Jr. sees the twins hiding behind the couch and She-Crab lifts it up, exposing them. Busted!
Hank and Barb borrow a helicopter from Blobbin to lovingly watch Chloe while she's at the skate park with her friends while still being the loving and protective parents that she still so clearly needs. So, spying on her. Blobbin lets them keep the helicopter because he's rich and has 18 more, but no pilots. The newest model of Blobcopter is completely pilotless, working by dropping the ladder for Blobbin to climb on board. Within 15 seconds. He gets stuck as it flies away. Hank and Barb watch Chloe from the helicopter, and everything is so far so good. Hank orders some Splat Shakes, for delivery with a giant slingshot. They spill as he catches them and short-circuit the helicopter, and they crash land in front of the skate park, running away after Chloe confronts them.
With Max and Phoebe captured, the V-Team reveal what the secret item they're looking for is, the Power Plant. Which Max and Phoebe know nothing about. Ancient villagers who ate the seeds of this mysterious plant were granted superpowers. With no further use for the twins, the V-Team take them to the Mayhem Cafe, Dark Mayhem's old lair dedicated to his hatred of the Thundermans. They depart for Hiddenville to get the Power Plant out of Hank and leave Max and Phoebe locked in a torture booth with a pre-programmed personalised torture session, starting with Max's old gym socks, lightning, and Phoebe's middle school valedictorian speech.
The V-Team coerce the Thundermans to give them the Power Plant by showing the footage of Max and Phoebe's torture, in exchange for telling them where the twins are. Hank takes the Power Plant from its hiding spot, inside the penguin butler that changes the family portraits. After testing the plants' legitimacy by feeding a red seed to a squirrel, giving it glowing red eyes and fire breath, the V-Team leave. They lied about telling the Thundermans where Max and Phoebe are, and put up a dome over Hiddenville to prevent Hank from following them. Even Chloe can't teleport out of the dome.
To conclude Max and Phoebe's torture session, their booth starts filling with liquid mercury, impervious to freeze and heat breath. In twelve minutes, it will fill completely, drowning the twins. The glass is unbreakable, even with their twin power. Max and Phoebe have a heart to heart around their motivations behind Max's desire for fame and Phoebe's desire to be the best superhero, and realise why their family hated working for them. Noticing a bag of party favors left over from one of Mayhem Jr.'s birthday parties and blow up the tank with an exploding sushi fridge magnet. It's not over yet, because Dark Mayhem rigged the cafe to self-destruct in 20 minutes if the twins escaped.
Back at the Thundermans' home, Chloe finds a blue seed pod left behind when the V-Team took the power plant. Red seeds create supervillains and blue seeds create superheroes. They gather almost everyone they know at the edge of the dome at Hiddenville Park to ask for their help in saving Max and Phoebe. Mrs. Wong and Principal Bradford initially refuse to help because they hate the Thundermans, but before they can leave, Chloe reminds them that Max and Phoebe have always been there for Hiddenville, with Cherry and Oyster recalling some of the twins' previous saves, so they need to quit being a bunch of weenies and get with the program. The Thundermans feed Wong, Bradford, Cherry, Oyster and Gideon blue Power Plant seeds, giving each of them superpowers. They and the Thundermans combine their powers to break a hole in the dome.
Max and Phoebe are unable to crack the security system to escape the Mayhem Cafe. With less than a minute left before the self-destruct, the family teleports in, but they can't teleport out because Chloe needs to recharge her power. So Hank punches out the keypad and shuts down the self-destruct sequence. Max and Phoebe are saved and reconcile with their family, but they need to find the V-Team, and fast! If Barb wanted to rain seeds down on everyone, she'd start at the highest point in Metroburg. Billy remembers where it is, having brought a sign back to school for a student. Mount Metroburg, with an elevation of 14,220 feet.
At the top of Mt. Metroburg, the V-Team's plan is almost complete, and they've broken their dads out of prison to watch a real evil plan. They've ground the red seeds into dust and will launch a drone to rain the red seed dust down on everyone in Metroburg and create a supervillain army to rule the world, and give their dads cushy jobs. Or not. Mayhem Jr. is about to launch the drone when he gets zapped. The Thundermans are here! After a hard fought battle, the Thundermans overcoming the villains' initial upper hand and defeat them, but Mayhem Jr. launches the drone.
Chloe steps up, offering to teleport someone to the drone. Hank and Barb are reluctant, but Chloe convinces them that she's ready. She's a Thunderman. It's what they do. She teleports Max and Phoebe on top of the drone so Max can disable it and Phoebe can remove the seed container with her telekinesis. They succeed, but Phoebe gets blown off the edge of the drone, almost falling. She tells them to get back to the family, but Max and Chloe refuses to leave her behind. The family watches an explosion in the sky, assuming the worst, before Max, Phoebe and Chloe teleport back.
Back at home, the Thundermans finally have a family night with games and Hank's chili. With the V-Team exposed as villains and most likely fired, Super President Kickbutt reinstates the T-Force, on the condition that their home in Hiddenville is named the new T-Force headquarters, so family time can come first. There is one thing they forgot... Mrs. Wong, Bradford, Cherry, Oyster and Gideon still have their powers. Max and Phoebe freeze them to deal with that problem later.
The film ends with Dr. Colosso being contacted by a mysterious being who offers him a mysterious assignment.
