The Upside Down Movie was a planned special episode based on the Noggin series The Upside Down Show. It was fully scripted by the show's co-creators and stars, David Collins and Shane Dundas, from 2008 to 2010. The movie was planned to act as the proper series finale, and the script development was funded by Nickelodeon Australia.[2] David Collins said that Nickelodeon was "hugely supportive of trying to get the film made."[2]
The movie was first announced by the newspaper The Australian on August 28, 2008.[5] In November 2008, David Collins announced in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald that the movie was planned to start filming in 2009.[4]
Updates about the movie were published to the Umbilical Brothers' website every few months from 2008 to 2011. It was eventually revealed that the crew needed financial support from outside investors to start filming. Collins started an online petition (here) to show public interest in the movie, but it never gained enough support and the project has been in limbo since then. They have said that the project is not cancelled, just on hold.
Plot[]
The plot of the movie has not been revealed. It is known that the entire script was finished and that the movie was actually planned to go against the main episode structure of The Upside Down Show.[6] A small hint about the plot was given in September 2008. The moderator of the Umbilical Brothers' website said, in response to fans guessing which places would be visited:
- "Don't be surprised if the script isn't exactly like the format of the UDS....but hey, that doesn't mean we can't talk about what our favorite new places to visit would be...carry on!" (source)
History[]
The movie were first announced in August 2008 by The Australian. It was reported that a movie based on the show was being produced. (source) The Umbilical Brothers announced that it had been "in the works for quite some time." In September, David Collins and Shane Dundas elaborated on their Facebook page, saying that "there is a script in development for a movie version of The Upside Down Show."[7]
From September 2008 until mid-2011, the moderator of the Umbilical Brothers website gave regular updates about the movie. It was confirmed that the movie was planned to be released theatrically only in Australia, with other countries having smaller direct-to-video or TV releases of the movie.[8]
The Sydney Morning Herald, another newspaper, published an interview with the Umbilical Brothers in November 2008. This time, they said the film was planned to start filming in the next year. They also confirmed the title as The Upside Down Movie. They wrote:
- "Next year the Umbies will begin filming their first feature film, The Upside Down Movie, a spin-off from their hit children's television series The Upside Down Show." (source)
2009 passed with no updates on the filming. In January 2010, David Collins announced that the script had been finished but that they needed outside financing, which prevented them from filming in the past year. He praised Nickelodeon Australia for their help with the movie, saying that they were "hugely supportive of trying to get the film made and have been partially funding the script development." (source)
In 2017 and 2019, David Collins gave a few comments about the movie. In March 2017, he confirmed that he was still trying to find support for the movie.[9] In September 2019, in response to a fan's comment about wanting to see the movie, David Collins wrote: "right!? perhaps we should try a kickstarter."[10]
