Tommy Pickles and the Great White Thing was a pilot produced by Klasky-Csupo to sell Rugrats to television networks. Nickelodeon picked the series to air and was one of the three original Nicktoons to air in August of 1991.

The short itself was not broadcast on television. It instead was broadcasted to cable networks as a pilot. It was then tested, and Nickelodeon picked up the series

but a few clips were used in the show's first set of commercial bumpers, and the scene at the end where Tommy and Spike are watching TV was repurposed for a station ID (which would later be reused as a bumper for NickRewind). The full pilot was eventually included as a bonus feature on the Rugrats: Decade in Diapers - Volume 1 VHS and the Decade in Diapers DVD.
