Ursa is the mother of Zuko and Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender. She is voiced by Jen Cohn.
Biography[]
Ursa's life prior to the events of the show is fleshed out in the comic "The Search"; she was born in Hira'a, a small Fire Nation village and was the daughter of the local magistrate; her grandfather was Avatar Roku. Ursa lived a quiet, and happy life as an actress with her soon-to-be husband and childhood friend Ikem.
Ursa's life changed when Azulon, the reigning Fire Lord, and his son Ozai arrived in the town; Ozai proposed to Ursa to marry him and produce powerful firebending children; with no other option, Ursa married into the royal family, and was forced to sever ties with her family, friends and Ikem.
Shortly afterwards, Ursa gave birth to Zuko and Azula; Ursa loved her children; however, Zuko gravitated towards his mother for love and approval, whereas Azula looked up more to Ozai.
After Ozai's brother Iroh abandoned the seige of Ba Sing Se following the death of his son, Lu Ten, Ozai made a grab for power; when Zuko's life was threatened, Ursa proposed a plan to Ozai; to keep Zuko safe, she would concoct a poison that would kill Azulon, allowing Ozai to secure the throne; Ozai accepted the terms on the condition that Ursa leave the capital city; Ursa was banished and after Azulon's death, Ozai took the throne.
After Ozai's defeat, Zuko became Fire Lord, and visited his father-who had had his firebending taken from him by Aang, and Azula, who was visiting from a mental institution.
